Is Red Light Therapy Safe for Your Eyes?

Red light therapy masks are generally safe when used properly, but should not be used directly on or around the eyes unless under clinical guidance.

Is red light therapy safe for your eyes?

Red light therapy masks are commonly used for skin rejuvenation — but they’re not designed to treat the eye area. Most masks include cutouts around the eyes and advise users to close their eyes during treatment. We agree with this guidance: always avoid direct red light exposure to your eyes unless under clinical supervision.

That said, researchers are exploring eye-specific uses for red light therapy in the following areas:

1. Dry Macular Degeneration

A treatment called Valeda (by LumiThera) uses red and near-infrared wavelengths to stimulate eye tissue. Early studies show a modest benefit — about a 4–5 letter improvement on eye charts — but it’s not yet widely available.

2. Myopia Control in Children

Repeated Low-Level Red Light (RLRL) therapy is being studied as a way to slow or reverse myopia (nearsightedness). Results are promising — some children show up to 69% slowing in eye growth. However, occasional reports of thermal damage mean we don’t recommend this yet for routine care.

3. Dry Eye and Blepharitis

Red and near-infrared light can help reduce inflammation and improve tear gland function. Some clinics offer in-office light therapy as part of a dry eye treatment plan.
