Seniors' Comprehensive Eye Exam

As we get older, our eyes go through natural changes and become more susceptible to conditions like cataracts, glaucoma, and macular degeneration.

Many of these conditions can develop without noticeable symptoms — which is why we recommend annual eye exams for adults aged 65 and over.

Every exam includes a review of your eyeglass prescription, a personalized treatment plan, and, if discussed, a contact lens prescription.

Seniors' Comprehensive Eye Exam

What is included

  • Personalized consultation with an optometrist
  • Assessment of visual acuity and eye health
  • Prescription updates for glasses and contacts **
  • OCT, retinal imaging and visual field screening **
  • Referral for medical or surgical care if needed
  • We'll explain any recommended testing and applicable fees upfront. Some services are not covered by OHIP.

** Tests are performed when clinically indicated.

For many people, a seniors' eye exam is the first time they learn about cataracts, glaucoma risk, macular health, or diabetic eye changes. We take time to explain what we see, what matters now, and what to watch over time.

Who this exam is for

This exam is for adults 65+ and for adults with OHIP-covered medical eye conditions. It is also a good fit if you have noticed changes in vision, have diabetes or high blood pressure, take long-term medications, or want a clear baseline for ongoing eye health.

  • New or changing vision (blur, glare, trouble driving at night)
  • Dryness, burning, watering, or fluctuating comfort
  • New floaters, flashes, or a shadow/curtain in vision (urgent)
  • Family history of glaucoma or macular degeneration

What we assess

A comprehensive exam looks beyond your prescription. We assess vision, eye pressure and optic nerve health, the retina and macula, and any symptoms you bring in.

Vision and comfort

Prescription changes, reading needs, glare, and dry eye comfort.

Eye health and risk

Cataracts, glaucoma risk, macular health, and changes related to diabetes or blood pressure.

What to expect during your visit

  1. History and symptoms: what has changed, what you are noticing, and what matters day-to-day.
  2. Testing and exam: vision testing, eye health assessment, and any clinically appropriate imaging or diagnostics.
  3. Clear explanation: what we found, what is normal, what needs monitoring, and what we recommend next.

If dilation is recommended, we will discuss it with you. You may want to avoid driving immediately afterward.

Imaging and recommended testing

We use advanced diagnostics and imaging because they improve the standard of care and help us make better decisions. Recommended testing is based on clinical judgment and the information needed to provide appropriate care.

Applicable fees are explained upfront. Some services are not covered by OHIP and may be eligible for reimbursement through third-party insurance, depending on the plan.

For details on OHIP rules and common scenarios, see OHIP eligibility and coverage.

What to bring

  • Your health card
  • Glasses and contact lenses (if you wear them)
  • A current medication list
  • Any relevant eye records (if you have them)

Common questions

  • How often should I have an eye exam? Many seniors benefit from regular exams. Frequency depends on your eye health, risk factors, and symptoms.
  • Will you check for cataracts, glaucoma, or macular degeneration? Yes. We assess for common age-related conditions and explain what we see and what it means.
  • What symptoms should be treated as urgent? New flashes, a sudden increase in floaters, or a shadow/curtain in vision should be assessed urgently.

What to do next

If you are due for an exam or have noticed changes in your vision, the next step is to book a comprehensive eye exam. We will guide you through eligibility, testing, and any fees before proceeding.
