How Does Orthokeratology Work?

What is Ortho-K?

Orthokeratology (Ortho-K) is a non-surgical process using specially designed lenses worn overnight. These lenses reshape your cornea temporarily, correcting nearsightedness (myopia) and mild astigmatism.

Who is it for?

Ideal for active adults who don’t want daytime lenses or for children with progressive myopia. Ortho-K is often part of myopia management plans.

Ortho-K and policing careers

One thing to raise before you start: the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police lists orthokeratology as not allowed under its vision standard for police constable applicants. Because ortho-K reshapes the cornea overnight and the effect reverses when you stop, discontinuing it means a period of shifting vision before the cornea settles.

If a policing application is anywhere in your plans, say so at the fitting rather than after. See OACP police vision testing.

Is it safe?

Yes — when monitored properly by your optometrist. Regular follow-ups are essential to ensure good results and eye health.
